The event is usually led by percussion legends like Peruvanam Kuttan Marar. This is followed by the mid-morning Ilanjithara Melam with scores of drums, cymbals, big horn and and other instruments. Normally, the 24-hour Pooram starts with the arrival of small poorams along with their elephants from nearby temples to the Vadakkumnathan temple grounds in the early morning. Both devaswoms have taken the stand that they cannot compromise on the rituals and elephant parade. He also convened a meeting of the representatives of the Thiruvambady and Paremekkavu devaswoms (temple boards) on April 13.
